This book covers quantitative techniques and indices that can be used in the empirical description and analysis of urban spatial formation and settlement. Based on case-study applications, each technique and index is outlined and illustrated by a step-by-step fashion. With few exceptions, use is made of ready-available software. A brief historical background also accompanies the technical discussion.
